If you are looking at the title of this course, the idea of “unpacking” may be conjuring images of joy (taking out flip flops upon arrival to your destination), or sadness (back home and finding a seashell in your pocket), or perhaps, angst, if you immediately think of a time when you spent hours unpacking new standards. However, we know unpacking anything complex will lead to new discoveries.
It is imperative that teachers understand how and why you have selected a performance level or how you are supporting a claim about practice. This requires observers to develop a deep understanding of their framework and the expectations for teachers/service providers. The first step in this process is through an unpacking or deep dive into each domain, indicator, and attribute, examining the overarching intent and paying close attention to the language integrated throughout. It is important to note that this course will not result in a complete unpacking of your rubric. You will be guided through 3 steps of an unpacking process that you can then apply to your framework on your own and with your team. Through the lessons, you will explore the following:
- Developing a general understanding of intent and research
- Defining challenging phrases and instructional concepts
- Recognizing key levers between performance levels
